What Is Bipolar Disorder?

The key characteristic of bipolar disorders is extreme, periodic shifts in an individual’s energy, which affect their mood and ability to function. Symptoms, which can last for days or weeks, are intense emotional highs, known as hypomania or mania, and lows where all joy evaporates and the individual experiences intense depressive episodes.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders recognizes four types of bipolar disorders:

  1. Bipolar I: Manic or mixed episodes lasting at least seven days and representing a major change from a person’s normal behavior.
  2. Bipolar II: Patterns of major depressive and hypomanic episodes but without extreme manic behavior.
  3. Cyclothymic Disorder: Mild mood swings that shift back and forth for a minimum of two years.
  4. Bipolar Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (BP-NOS): Symptoms are out of the range of the person’s normal behavior, but symptoms do not meet the diagnostic criteria for Bipolar I or II.
