Mental health struggles for many lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQIA+ and Gender Expansive) individuals are rooted in how the world treats or stigmatizes them, not gender identity itself. According to The Trevor Project, 39% of LGBTQ+ young people, including roughly half of transgender and nonbinary youth, considered attempting suicide in 2024. Now more than ever, it is essential to create safe, affirming spaces where these individuals are fully seen and valued.
Gender dysphoria is the significant distress or discomfort someone feels when their inner gender identity does not match the sex they were assigned at birth. These feelings can lead to an intense desire to be seen and treated as their identified gender, often coupled with anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges.
Additionally, the LGBTQIA+ and Gender Expansive community often faces minority stress, a socially based stressor due to stigma, prejudice, and discrimination against marginalized identities. Validating these experiences is the first step in the healing process for these individuals.
While hormones and puberty blockers can significantly lower depression and suicide risk, medical transitioning is only one part of how gender-affirming care saves lives. Mental health programs, such as Bournewood Health Systems’ Kaleidoscope Program, provide the essential behavioral counterpart to gender-affirming care. These programs can offer a partial hospitalization setting for individuals to safely navigate the emotional complexities of transition, social rejection, anxiety, mood, trauma related mental health challenges and co-occurring substance abuse.
Specifically, at Bournewood, we take a personalized approach to care, tailored to best serve you and your specific needs. We combine several therapeutic modalities to aid adult individuals in the LGBTQIA+ and Gender Expansive community, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), support groups, and psycho-education.
Finding providers who are both clinically skilled and culturally-informed can be challenging. You deserve care that prioritizes your mental health and respects names, pronouns, and lived experiences. At Bournewood, our providers are specifically trained in LGBTQIA+ and Gender Expansive mental health, creating a true safe space for individuals to come and feel accepted.
Bournewood proudly serves the LGBTQIA+ and Gender Expansive community, helping individuals across the nation discover a path to a better mindset. Our Kaleidoscope Program runs weekdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., following a structured routine designed specifically for you. We created this program to bridge the gap in gender-affirming care and therapy in the Boston area.
