Bournewood is Proud to Be a Zero Suicide Facility

Every minute of every day suicide impacts the lives of hundreds of people across the globe. -Zero Suicide

Suicide deaths for patients at risk of suicide in health and behavioral health systems are preventable. Bournewood Health Systems has always been dedicated to improving patient care and outcomes. That’s why we joined the nationwide transformation efforts by becoming a Zero Suicide™ healthcare facility.

The high rate of suicide deaths among people with mental health and substance use conditions is our driving force to ensure that we are trained and supported in suicide awareness, prevention, treatment, and aftercare. And with the Zero Suicide™ framework, we are rising to the challenge.

It is a culture shift away from fragmented suicide care toward a holistic and comprehensive approach to patient safety and quality improvement — our most fundamental responsibility — and to the safety and support of our staff who do the demanding work of treating and caring for individuals who are suicidal.

A Call to Action

The Zero Suicide™ approach gives us the way forward. At Bournewood, we are committed to a comprehensive approach to patient safety and quality improvement — the most fundamental responsibility of health care — and to the safety and support of the staff who do the demanding work of treating and caring for patients.

Essential Elements of Suicide Care

Zero Suicide is a call to relentlessly pursue a reduction in suicide and improve the care for those who seek help. After researching successful approaches to suicide reduction, the Action Alliance’s Clinical Care and Intervention Task Force identified seven essential elements of suicide care for health and behavioral healthcare systems to adopt:

  • Lead system-wide culture change committed to reducing suicides
  • Train a competent, confident, and caring workforce
  • Identify individuals with suicide risk via comprehensive screening and assessment
  • Engage all individuals at-risk of suicide using a suicide care management plan
  • Treat suicidal thoughts and behaviors using evidence-based treatments
  • Transition individuals through care with warm hand-offs and supportive contacts
  • Improve policies and procedures through continuous quality improvement
